Dubai is a city known for its modern skyscrapers, unique architecture and luxurious lifestyle. However, beneath the shiny façade lies an ancient history and rich cultural heritage. At the heart of this narrative is the Al Fahidi Fort, which houses the Dubai Museum, one of the city’s most important cultural institutions. Find out more on the UAE blog.
History of the Al Fahidi Fort
Al Fahidi Fort is the oldest surviving building in Dubai, built in 1787. Initially, the fort was used to protect the city from outside attacks and was an important strategic location. Over time, the fort also served as a residence for the ruler and an arsenal. Its massive walls and traditional architecture are a testament to the resilience and endurance of the people who lived in these harsh conditions long before the modern era.

Today, the Al Fahidi Fort is home to the Dubai Museum, which offers visitors a glimpse into the world of old Dubai. The museum opened in 1971, and since then its exhibits have helped travelers from all over the world learn about the ancient history, traditions and culture of the city. The museum exhibits cover different eras and aspects of the life of the region’s inhabitants. Here you can see artifacts related to pearl diving, which was the main industry before the discovery of oil. Separate halls are dedicated to the life and crafts of the Bedouins, trade and interaction with other cultures, as well as ancient rituals and traditions. One of the most impressive parts of the museum is the reconstruction of a traditional village.
Here, houses, craft workshops and shops have been recreated, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of that time. Visitors can also get acquainted with the exhibition dedicated to marine life and fishing — important sectors of the economy of old Dubai.
